CPO
CPO (Cost Per Order) is a monetization model that implies the affiliate being paid only for a confirmed order. It means that the user must not just click on a link or leave a request, but buy a product or service. The model is common in e-commerce offers. Affiliate programs get a complete offer, while affiliates have fewer "empty" leads. In this case, however, warming up and traffic quality requirements will be higher.
CPO vs CPA: what's best for affiliates?
The difference is in the perception of the target action. While the CPA (Cost Per Action) model assumes a reward for any activity (registration, subscription, installation), CPA is a more specific format of CPA. In other words, only a pre-determined action will cost—a purchase. CPA and CPO work under the same payment principle, yet the reward conditions are different.
CPO profitability: How to calculate ROI?
ROI (Return on Investment) calculation will help to determine profitability. The formula is as follows:
ROI = (Revenue – Expenses) ÷ Expenses × 100%
For example, one confirmed order costs 15 USD, and attracting one customer costs 10 USD, then:
ROI = (15 – 10) ÷ 10 × 100 = 50%.
Allas, ROI calculation is not enough. The key factor is CR (conversion rate), the conversion from a click to a purchase. If it is low, even a high CPO rate will not cover the costs. Therefore, without tracking, A/B splits, and continuous optimization, such setups quickly become unprofitable.
Who is CPO suitable for, and which offers work well with it?
Product verticals such as e-commerce, dropshipping, and CPA stores are suitable. This payment model is less commonly used in niches with paid services or online education. CPO works well with warm traffic, when the user is already ready to purchase, and the offer doesn't need warming up.
CPO is effective for SEO sites, product catalogs, landing pages with reviews, and TikTok ads that direct users straight to the offer. For cold traffic, when the user is not yet ready to spend, CPO is a losing option. In this case, it's better to switch to CPA or CPL.
